Bringing resilient infrastructure to Bangladesh

Housing, water, sanitation, waste management, education, health and transportation all face major challenges in Bangladesh, a country under constant threat from climate events and the pressures of rapid urbanisation.

Stronger, more resilient infrastructure and transport systems have never been more important to Bangladesh's economy. Arup has been working with a U.N. agency to achieve just that.

mg电子娱乐官方网站The United Nations Operations and Project Services (UNOPS) is a global donor agency providing support to the country’s Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

The LGED wanted to find ways to lower operational costs and adopt a more sustainable means of managing its assets, given the recurrence of natural disasters like floods, cyclones, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Arup is an important part of the initiative for capability development for the Government of Bangladesh and is providing important strategic and technical guidance to our in-country team. ” Mr Stefan Kohler UNOPS Country Manager, Bangladesh mg电子娱乐官方网站

A new approach to future risk

Arup’s Australasia team met with the Bangladeshi government and UNOPS to advise on asset management practices for rural and urban infrastructure in the country, including roads and small-scale water resources. Through a series of workshops, we focused on finding practical asset management systems and processes to support the LGED, as well as broader planning, design, delivery, operations and maintenance.

We are now developing a new infrastructure asset management framework that supports risk, cost management, lengthens the lifecycle of assets and increases resilience. Our team is aligning asset management guiding principles and objectives to broader government outcomes, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Ongoing impact

We are also developing a set of service objectives aligned to the goals of the Bangladeshi government, based around planning and governance, priorities, decision support tools and asset information. Arup and UNOPS are also building capability with the in-country team and broader sustainability objectives are being aligned.
